When night falls in the old town of Famagusta, part of the Venetian palace transforms into a stage brimming with magic, music, and emotion. In a unique blend of theatre, operetta, acrobatics, and wild pop and rock music, the story of Othello is retold—as a cabaret production like no other.
This modern reinterpretation of Shakespeare’s tragedy focuses on the theme of violence against women, combining classical motifs with contemporary expression. The production is staged by Cyprus Cabaret and supported by the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Environment, the Municipality of Famagusta, and the Department of Antiquities. It is part of the "Drama Drama" concept by the UP Organization, which merges multisensory theatre with live music, dance, and gastronomy.
The performance unfolds not just on stage, but right in the middle of the audience—dramatic, intimate, and electrifying. While guests enjoy a Mediterranean four-course banquet, they encounter Othello, Desdemona, Iago, and the spirited islanders in a dynamic interplay of loyalty, jealousy, ambition, and desire. The cabaret becomes an immersive experience in which each guest becomes part of the legend.
The show has a truly international flair: while the dialogue is in English, the musical pieces are performed in their original languages. Arias such as the “Habanera” from Carmen and “La donna è mobile” from Verdi’s Rigoletto, as well as classics like “O sole mio,” “Time to Say Goodbye,” “Delilah,” and “Celebration,” accompanied by electric guitar and saxophone, create a musical spectrum ranging from Verdi to Lady Gaga. The Circle Band, Move Up Dance Group, and Operamania deliver a live musical firework full of passion.
The spoken parts remain deliberately sparse compared to the music—without diminishing the effect. On the contrary, the cabaret thrives on its sensual visuals, stirring music, and expressive physical performance. Othello is portrayed here as a white man, while his antagonist Iago appears as a grotesque ventriloquist puppet, eerily reminiscent of Grover from Sesame Street, offering ironic counterpoints.
One minor flaw: the originally planned acrobatic numbers are barely integrated into the main plot. But after the dramatic finale, the mood shifts: the performance ends in a lively party with conga lines, dance routines, and catchy hits—from Tina Turner and ABBA to an almost perfect Can-Can. The outstanding singers and dancers even manage to inspire some guests to spontaneously join in.
In the atmospheric setting under the open sky, by candlelight among the medieval ruins of Famagusta, theatrical magic meets Cypriot hospitality. Fire, wine, music, and emotion merge into a night you won’t soon forget.
This is not just Othello. This is your night in history. The table is set. The drama begins.

Wenn es dunkel wird in der Altstadt von Famagusta, verwandelt sich ein Teil der venezianischen Palastanlage in eine Bühne voller Magie, Musik und Emotionen. In einer einzigartigen Mischung aus Theater, Operette, Akrobatik und wilder Pop- und Rockmusik wird die Geschichte von Othello neu erzählt – als Cabaret-Inszenierung der besonderen Art.
Diese moderne Neuinterpretation von Shakespeares Tragödie fokussiert sich auf das Thema Gewalt gegen Frauen und verbindet klassische Themen mit gegenwärtigem Ausdruck. Die Inszenierung stammt von Cyprus Cabaret und wird unterstützt vom Ministerium für Tourismus, Kultur und Umwelt, der Gemeinde Famagusta sowie dem Amt für antike Werke. Sie ist Teil des „Drama Drama“-Konzepts der UP Organization, das multisensorisches Theater mit Livemusik, Tanz und Gastronomie verschmilzt.
Die Aufführung entfaltet sich nicht nur auf der Bühne, sondern mitten im Publikum – dramatisch, intim und elektrisierend. Während die Gäste ein mediterranes Vier-Gänge-Bankett genießen, begegnen sie Othello, Desdemona, Iago und den lebhaften Inselbewohnern in einem Wechselspiel aus Loyalität, Eifersucht, Ehrgeiz und Verlangen. Das Cabaret wird so zu einem immersiven Erlebnis, in dem jede Zuschauerin und jeder Zuschauer Teil der Legende wird.
Die Darbietung ist international geprägt: Während die Dialoge auf Englisch erfolgen, erklingen die Musikstücke in ihren Originalsprachen. Arien wie das „Habanera“ aus Carmen, „La donna è mobile“ aus Verdis Rigoletto, bis hin zu Klassikern wie „O sole mio“, „Time to Say Goodbye“, „Delilah“ oder „Celebration“, unterstützt von E-Gitarre und Saxofon, ergeben eine musikalische Bandbreite von Verdi bis Lady Gaga. Die Circle Band, die Move Up Dance Group und Operamania sorgen für ein musikalisches Feuerwerk – live und voller Leidenschaft.
Der Sprechanteil bleibt gegenüber der Musik bewusst zurückhaltend, was der Wirkung jedoch keinen Abbruch tut. Im Gegenteil – das Cabaret lebt von seinen sinnlichen Bildern, der mitreißenden Musik und der körperbetonten Darstellung. Othello wird hier als weißer Mann dargestellt, während sein Gegenspieler Jago als groteske Bauchrednerpuppe mit frappierender Ähnlichkeit zu Grobi aus der Sesamstraße für ironische Brechungen sorgt.
Ein kleines Manko: Die ursprünglich eingeplanten Akrobatiknummern sind in die eigentliche Handlung kaum eingebunden. Doch nach dem dramatischen Finale wird es ausgelassen: Die Aufführung endet in einer ausgelassenen Party mit Polonaise, Tanzeinlagen und mitreißenden Hits – von Tina Turner über ABBA bis hin zu einem fast perfekten Can-Can. Die hervorragenden Sängerinnen, Sänger und Tänzer:innen schaffen es sogar, einige Gäste zum spontanen Mittanzen zu animieren.
In der stimmungsvollen Atmosphäre unter freiem Himmel, im Kerzenschein der mittelalterlichen Ruinen von Famagusta, trifft theatralische Magie auf zypriotische Gastfreundschaft. Feuer, Wein, Musik und Gefühl verschmelzen zu einer Nacht, die man so schnell nicht vergisst.
Dies ist nicht nur Othello. Dies ist Ihre Nacht in der Geschichte. Der Tisch ist gedeckt. Das Drama beginnt.
